The standards, "Eat Smart: North Carolina’s Recommended Standards For All Foods Available in School" were developed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, NC Division of Public Health and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
Standards for all foods served in schools were announced in May, 2004, outlining nutrition recommendations for 4 primary areas:
1) Vending Services
2) Foods at School Events
3) School meals
4) A la carte items
