Fit Community

Fit Together announces the launch of its second round of Fit Community. A designation and grants program, Fit Community recognizes and rewards the efforts of North Carolina -communities to promote physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco-use prevention behaviors.

All North Carolina municipalities and counties (except those that were awarded the designation in 2006) are eligible for a Fit Community designation and will be recognized if they have excelled in supporting physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco-use prevention efforts. In the Spring of 2007, HWTF and BCBSNC will designate Fit Communities who will receive:

  • highway signage for the entrance to the community;
  • a formal plaque to be hung in the Mayor's or County Commission Chair's office; and
  • use of the Fit Community designation logo for promotional purposes.

Communities that apply for the designation may also choose to compete for grant funding, which is designed to complement existing community health efforts. Grants will support a range of innovative strategies, especially those that bring about policy and environmental change that make routine physical activity and healthy eating behaviors more accessible. This funding is offered directly by the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund, and more information about the grant program can be found by visiting:
